Glad I’m Not In Egypt
I have to say that ignorance is bliss. I completely take it for granted that I can come to this blog site and say pretty much whatever I want. I have some restrictions - I can’t be defamatory, or use vulgarity, but come on, that’s not too bad. I’m still left with plenty of room for speaking my mind about our incompetent president, insane religions and the stupidity behind creationism, but that isn’t the case for all bloggers outside the United States.
Abdel Kareem Suleiman, a blogger from Egypt, was given hard jail time (4 years worth) for his blogging habits. No, he didn’t declare himself to be some international safety threat. All he did was bad-mouth Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and verbally slam Islam. Yep! That’s it!
I found an article on English PEN that talks about the kind of imprisonment Abdel Kareem Suleiman is enduring for speaking his opinion.
According to the February 9, 2007 article, Suleiman is in solitary confinement, in harsh conditions. It doesn’t go into detail about what “harsh conditions” is supposed to mean, but regardless of what his “harsh conditions” consist of, it sounds a little excessive for announcing his dislike for Islam and the Egyptian President.
I shudder to imagine a life where I’m not able to speak my mind. Suleiman is living my nightmare. I get upset almost daily about political issues, and the religious extreme. If I couldn’t say it out loud, or have Real Time With Bill Maher to watch, I would go nuts! I’m just really glad that I’m not in Egypt! It’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there!

I read about this story and it really does seem unbelievable. And like you, I look forward to Bill Maher’s show every week. New episode tonight!

[...] Concerning Blog Censorship February 24th, 2007 by Steve Johnson I’d like to direct you to my fellow news blogger’s site, Get Incensed, for a post she wrote having to do with the imprisonment of an Egyptian blogger for speaking out against the government and the government’s religion, Islam. His sentence is a ridiculous four years. [...]

[...] Finally, Get Incensed wrote a thought provoking article about censorship and blogging in Egypt: Abdel Kareem Suleiman, a blogger from Egypt, was given hard jail time (4 years worth) for his blogging habits. No, he didn’t declare himself to be some international safety threat. All he did was bad-mouth Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and verbally slam Islam. Yep! That’s it! [...]

It is incredible the length a government will go to to keep silent its population. I was in a conversation with an American teaching English in Egypt and the subject of Anne Frank came up and how she cannot introduce her students to the book because it is banned in the country. It’s so sad that still there is so much of this censorship in the world. I do take for granted that I come from America where I have more freedoms and even more so now that I live in the Netherlands.
